Leader Holsteins run by
Travis and Melissa Deans is located at Oakey, a short
drive west of the garden city Toowoomba, Queensland,
Australia. The 272 ha farm is situated in the heart of
renowned cropping country on the Darling Downs.
Founded in 1995 Leader Holsteins has since the
beginning, had a strong focus on breeding and developing
an outstanding herd of cows. This was solidified in 2009
with the herd winning 3 major Supreme Dairy cow awards
with 3 different cows. Along the way many awards have
been won including Australian Cow of the Year in 2005
with Toolamba Broker Satin EX1E 24*. Nearly 60% of the
current herd are direct descendants of Satin, a cow that
has helped Leader Holsteins define a strong place in
Australia’s Stud Holstein industry.
Over the last 15 years, 28 excellent cows have been bred
or owned, with 25 cows awarded excellent in the last 5
years, 21 of which have been bred. In 2009 another
milestone was achieved with Leader Roy Satin classifying
excellent and in doing so completed 5 generations in a
row to be scored Excellent.
Production has also been a focal point, with the herd
averaging over 10000lt per cow for the last 8 years. The
current herd average is 10513 3.7% 390kgs fat 3.2%
335kgs protein.
Recently Leader Rudolph Satin EX90 1E 6* completed
100000lts of milk lifetime, the first here at Leader
Holsteins. Following in her footsteps are 3 herd mates
that will reach this milestone later in the year.
